chapter 37

No one moved.

Noah presented himself to the female Issurian, his claim of being the avatar still hanging heavily in the air. He held his chin up defiantly, no trace of fear in his expression as he faced the towering, demon-like creature. Alone.

Amara couldn’t understand why Noah was doing this for her. He’d made his loathing for her quite clear, and Tecala offered an easy opportunity to get rid of her once and for all. Well, Amara thought, Lady Ingrid did say his loyalty was beyond reproach.

Her thoughts were interrupted as Noah let out a cry and dropped to his knees, his sword tumbling from limp fingers.

Tecala gave a throaty chuckle. “The avatar is a woman, pitiful meatsack. You are no woman and, with your pathetic stats, you are certainly no avatar.” Her fiery gaze swept across the others. “This is the last time I will make my offer. Give up the avatar, and you may live.”

Borim pushed Amara aside gently and took up a position in front of her. “Did your icy home freeze your brain or something? What sort of idiot would trust the word of a foul demoness?”

The Issurian woman sighed. “Then I have no choice—”

“Wait! That one there is the avatar,” Ackley shouted, a finger thrust toward Amara. He continued haltingly, choosing his words with care. “Or so she claims. We wouldn’t want to … unwittingly … surrender a false avatar to you. We certainly don’t want you to become …upset.”

As Amara endured Tecala’s piercing gaze, she felt icy fingers tightening around her soul. The pressure continued until she thought her chest would burst. She wanted to cry out, then—

As suddenly as it began, the sensation disappeared, leaving only a deep chill.

“So, it’s true,” Tecala breathed. “An avatar has returned to the world.” She hesitated for a moment, seeming less assured. “As I said, the rest of you are free to go, even the foolish dwarf who needs to learn his place.”

Borim planted his feet and lifted his axe. “If you try to take her, I’ll send you running all the way back to tundra with your tail between your legs.”

Jonas stood shoulder to shoulder with the dwarf, their bodies shielding Amara from the Issurian. “I will not allow you to lay a single finger on her.”

“Yeah,” Salamander called out. “What they said!”

Ackley circled around Amara, giving her companions a wide berth. “They do not speak for the rest of us, Lady Tecala. Perhaps some arrangement could be worked out with my group? We’re always seeking employment, and we know the layout of Stout Oak Keep. Rather intimately.”

“Yes, I imagine something could be arranged.” Tecala lifted her spinning disc of darkness. “However, if you wish to serve me, I would advise you to step back.”

I’m going to make that asshole pay, Amara thought. I never should have healed him.

Ackley bowed and then backed away from Amara. He ushered his group toward Tecala—Eldred, stopping to pick up Landon—before they hurried past the Issurian leader.

Amara’s eyes darted around the clearing, seeking a way out of their situation.
